Quality

Commitment to Quality

We are committed to the quality and safety of our products and to the satisfaction of our customers. We meet this responsibility by continually improving our products, processes and people to meet or exceed the expectations of our customers and stakeholders.

Our tyres undergo 100% inspection. Within the production line we have an independent inspection department where both physical and machine checks are done. A number of equipment have been installed to ensure tyres are confirmed for quality before warehousing. They include Static and Dynamic Balancers, Run Out Measuring equipment and an X Ray Unit. Calibration of equipment in this area (and in the whole facility) is taken very seriously, with master gauges being confirmed for accuracy on a routine basis.

In addition to the testing, the tyres undergo scheduled destructive tests to verify the quality status. We have Bureau of Standard (BOFS) machines that are able to carry out road simulation tests where the tyres are run to failure to establish endurance and mode of failure. We also carry out strength (resistance to penetration) through a plunger testing machine.   Our products also undergo external assessments. We subscribe to the voluntary Kenya Bureau of Standards Diamond Mark of Quality and automatically become eligible for Standardization Mark of Quality. As a minimum requirement for testing, we have adopted the EAS 359:2004 EAS 357:2004 EAS 358:2004 Specifications for Pneumatic Tyres for Light Trucks, Trucks and Buses and Passenger Cars respectively. Our tubes also undergo various checks and tests. We do waterleak, tensile and valve adhesion tests, among others.

Quality Management Systems Certification

We are certified to ISO/TS 16949 Quality Management Systems standard. This standard has been specifically developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and Technical Committee of ISO. ISO/TS 16949 outlines everything on achieving best practice when designing, developing and manufacturing.  It aims for the development of a Quality Management System that provides for continual improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and reduction of variations and waste in the manufacturing chain.

 The benefits of being certified to ISO/TS 16949 Standard include but not limited to:

  • Quality improvement in product and process,
  • Additional confidence for customers,
  • Common approach for managing Quality Management System,
  • Reassignment of resources to quality improvement and
  • Reduction in multiple 3rd party registrations.

 

ISO/TS 16949 requires that we plan and conduct internal audits as well as having the QMS audited by an independent third party certification body on an annual basis.

Internal Audits

ISO/TS 16949 Standard requires that the internal auditors be competent on the basis of education, skills, training and experience.  As an organization we have trained and equipped our internal auditors accordingly. We ensure that they understand ISO/TS requirements, use a process based approach in auditing, understand the core tools (SPC, MSA, FMEA, APQP and PPAP) and applicable customer requirements. This is in addition to having knowledge on SPC (Statistical Process Control) MSA (Measurement System Analysis), FMEA (Potential Failure Modes and Effect Analysis), APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process).

Unlike other management system audits, ISO/TS 16949 audits must be planned and conducted to cover all working shifts.  The internal audit must be planned on an annual basis and take into consideration the importance of the processes to be audited as well as the results from the previous audits.  In addition, the internal audit itself is divided into three distinct types of audit – Quality Management System (QMS) Audit, Manufacturing Process Audit and Product Audit.  QMS audit focuses on the conformance to ISO/TS 16949 and other related QMS, including CSR requirements.  Manufacturing Process Audit focuses on verifying the effectiveness of each manufacturing process.  Lastly, the Product Audit is focused on auditing the product requirements at the appropriate stages from production to delivery to ensure product requirements are met.

All the findings that are against the audit criteria will be issued with a Non-Conformance (NC) note and corrective action (CA) is required to be carried out by the auditees to address the root cause(s) of the problem so as to prevent recurrence.   OFI (Opportunity for Improvement) or Observations are issued by the auditors to address the potential non-conformance findings.  Preventive Actions (PA) are sometimes initiated to address the OFI or observation to prevent occurrence of the potential non-conformance.

External Audits

We have external audits conducted by auditors trained and qualified by their respective IATF Oversight Office (SMMT, IAOB, VDA, IATF France, QMC and ANFIA).   All the auditors need to have at least 6 years of full time working experiences in the automotive industry, with at least 2 years in the quality management field.
